According to( Liu and Wang, 2015), English language Learner (ELL) are students whose
native language is not English. These students encounter many challenges. They are required to
learn academic content at the same time learn the English language in which the material is
presented. Most ELL students find reading educational content very challenging because of the
complex syntactical units and technical vocabularies used (Brown, 2017). Currently, USA public
school are experiencing inundated schedule as the population of ELL increases yearly, and this
trend is projected to continue. By 2030, ELL students will approximately comprise around 40%
of the total USA student population, this can be attributed to immigration that has happened in
the past decade or so. The needs of ELL students have not been significantly met, hitherto, not so
many mainstream teachers confidently serve bilingual students. Many teachers lack the
foundation and skills of meeting bilingual student needs (Brown, 2017). This paper seeks to
know the problems ELL students face in their educational endeavors and on how to address
them.
More often than not, we hear of false myths and misconceptions that go around in
international schools (Bui, 2018). Some myths shared say that students may learn English with
ease if exposed to an environment surrounded by the language's native speakers! Exposure to
individuals of the target language is not enough (Medina and Campbell, 2015). It may take at
least two years and determination for one to gain grammatical proficiency. In approximation,
academic competence can be achieved between five to ten years. Other myths say the ability to
make a meaningful discourse in English can only be achieved through academic writing or
students should first learn English before embarking on academic.
