About the Author
The author of this speech is Huey Long. He is a man who history has described as being loved
and hated in equal measure. Huey was a Lousiana politician whose charisma saw him rise to the
highest rank of his political career at a very tender age. Long attributed most of his political
strength by appealing to the needs of the working class and the peasants. At the beginning of his
speech, he is quoted to say” Is that a right of life, when the young children of this country are
being reared into a sphere which is more owned by 12 men that is by 120 million people?”
(Long,1) Long was a smart character who never hesitated to air his opinions on various issues,
no matter how controversial they were. In as much as Long advocated for the politics of wealth
redistribution, he lived a totally different economic life. He made huge investments in several
companies. He would then brain wash the masses to fight the rival corporate bodies. Long’s
reform agenda ironically never touched on the interests of the black community. During his reign
as the governor, he signed a bill endorsing the racial separation of buses and trains. Most of the
observers believe that Long was so much obsessed with power that he ignored all the possible
risks that came with it. However, there are also those who believe that Long did a commendable
job in infrastructure, education and health services.
