Introduction

Chemical dependency counseling involves helping people who have drug or alcohol
Addiction to be able to overcome it. It allows individuals to understand the causes of drug abuse
or alcohol addiction. People can understand how their addiction affects their daily lives and the
people that surround them. Information exists on the effects and damages that drug and alcohol
abuse can do to one’s body, both physically and on a personal level. Chemical dependency
counselors must take care of addicts with the help of other counselors in other agencies. Patients
can discover the causes of their addiction and find ways to resolve them. Chemical dependency
counselors also work with the families of the affected to look for ways to help the patient
(Francis & Dugger, 2014).
Duty to Protect
During counseling, any communication between the patient and the counselor is private.
The information the patient gives to the counselor has legal and ethical protection. However,
even though the data gets protection, there are limits to this confidentiality (Francis & Dugger,
2014). It happens when the patient informs the counselor of their intention to harm another
person. For this reason, information may have to get revealed to a third party. The California
supreme court gave a ruling that if a patient intends to commit a crime or harm anyone, the
