Research Article Review
Due date: June 7, 2018
Length: 3-4 pages
Read the following article and write a summary and critique of this article. You can download the
article from Canvas under Modules/Assignments (https://clemson.instructure.com). Make sure you
EXPLICITLY answer all questions to show you have understood the basic concepts and methods
you have learned. You should summarize AND critique the article. By answering all parts of each
question thoroughly, you are actually doing both. If your paper only has a summary and has no
critique, at the best you can receive 6 points out of the total 10 points assigned to this paper. Please see
Schutt’s Chapter 2, p. 40-44 and Appendices A and B for guidelines and examples on how to
evaluate research articles. I also indicated at the end of each question the corresponding chapter that
has discussed those issues.
Gitlin, Laura N., Mary Corcoran, Laraine Winter, Alice Boyce, and Walter W. Hauck. 2001. “A
Randomized, Controlled Trial of a Home Environmental Intervention: Effect on Efficacy
and Upset in Caregivers and on Daily Function of Persons with Dementia.” The
Gerontologist 41(1):4-14.
Your summary and critique should address the following questions:
1. What were the major concepts in the research question(s)? How clearly were they defined? (Chapter
4)
2. Did the measures of the variables seem valid and reliable? How did the authors attempt to establish
this (e.g., did they establish face validity, content validity, criterion validity, construct validity? Did
they establish test-retest reliability, interitem reliability, alternate form reliability, interobserver
reliability)? Could any more have been done in the study to establish measurement validity? (Chapter
4)
3. Was an experimental design used? If so, which type of experimental design was it? What was the
treatment? What was (were) the outcome(s)? How were subjects in the experimental group and the
control group assigned? How were pretesting and posttesting done? Diagram the design following
examples in the textbook (see Exhibits 7.2, 7.6, 7.8, 7.12). (Chapter 7)
4. Identify sources of internal and external invalidity that are not controlled by the experimental
design. (Chapter 7)
Format of Paper
This is an individual homework assignment. The final paper should be completed independently by
each student. Write your assignment in the form of a short report, NOT Q&A format. You
should be able to respond to the issues above in 3-4 typed, double-spaced pages. If you get involved
and wish to write a somewhat longer paper, that is fine. You should do what you need to in order to
provide reasonable responses to the above issues. But bear in mind that this assignment is intended to
generate a short report, not a term paper.
All written assignments must: (a) be typed, double-spaced, 1" margins, 12 point Time New Roman
font; (b) be proofread and revised (several times); (c) place your name, course number, and date at the
front, top right corner of your essay; (d) number all pages.
