African American History
1.
The National Urban League was formed with a sole purpose of fighting against the
discrimination on African Americans as they moved the rural areas of the south into urban towns
in search of jobs and better living conditions. The National Urban League believed that if the
minority groups were empowered economically then they would have a say in the politics of the
United States of America (Reeds, 2009).
The NAACP right from its formation was involved in looking into justice without racial
bias following acts of violence against African Americans. Its goals were majorly based on the
principle of equality for all in the political arena, educational field as well as in the social
environment. The approach that the NAACP used is quite different from that of the National
Urban League in that rather than empowering minority groups economically they took most of
their matters to court most especially with regards to exercising their democratic rights and racial
segregation in schools.

2.
African Americans had been exposed to harsh working conditions in the South and their
search for a better life and better conditions is what prompted the great migration, which saw an
influx of African Americans into the urban cities in the north. Some the benefits that African
Americans enjoyed as a result of this migration are discussed as follows:

Increased pay. African Americans were now able to earn more in the urban centers of the North
as compared to what they used to earn while working in plantations and other industries in the
southern regions.
Security. African Americans enjoyed the peaceful north away from the mob lynching’s against
blacks that were happening in the south.
This migration into the North, however, had its own set of challenges as Blacks discovered soon
enough through the following ways:
Hostile whites. African Americans were received with hostility from their white counterparts
who dared not to have any interactions with them in the workplace through segregation.
A high cost of housing. Blacks were shocked by the high cost of housing and accommodation
thus establishing ghettos as cheaper alternatives (Leman, 2011).
