Discussion 4: Technology and relationships View this fascinating on Elderly Advice on Modern life. The interviews from the elderly people in the video touch on relationships and how those have evolved with technology. Pause and reflect. How is technology changing/affecting your relationships? Talk about the positive and negatives effects technology has on the various relationships in your life (family, friends, co-workers, etc..). Discussion 2: Ghosting discussion How best to break up with someone is a matter of age-old debate. But to break up -- that is, to actively let someone know that you are ending your relationship with them -- always seemed to me like a non-issue. Then I read this article on "ghosting." (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. I really need your help with this one. Am I just an old fuddy-duddy, or is this the most obnoxious thing in the world? Discussion 3: Clean up your contact list Take out your cell phone and go to your contact list. 1. If you were to clean up your contact list which numbers would you eliminate? Pick at least 10 people and write them down on a piece of paper. 2. What are some of the thoughts that entered your mind when eliminating a person’s name from you cell phone? 3. What were the reasons for the deterioration of the relationship? 4. Did you experience second thoughts about the name elimination? 5. Why do we sometimes refuse to let go? Discussion 1: Phatic Communication discussion The radio show This American Life had an episode on the seven things you're not supposed to talk about. It starts with the producer Sarah Koenig interviewing her mother, who gave Sarah the idea for the show by complaining about all the things people talk about that you don't want to hear about, including how they slept, their dreams, their aches and pains, their diets, and "route talk" (the last of these is talk about how you got where you currently are -this is big in Northeastern cities because all the roads are so busy). The show then goes on to a number of stories intended to debunk the idea that these should topics should not be talked about. It really is worth listening to here (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Whether or not you listen to this, consider whether there are things that you avoid talking about or that you resent others talking about -- not because they're upsetting or offensive but simply because nobody cares. This brings us back to phatic communication, which is communication designed to open the channels of communication. We call it "small talk," but it is really pretty complicated. What are the things you use to open the lines of communication with others? What are the things you avoid talking about because nobody cares? What's the difference?

Discussion 4: Technology and relationships
Reflecting on the video from the elderly people on relationship and technology, there are
many positive and negative effects both changing and affecting relationships. First, the
relationship is affected by technology whereby one writes or sends email to someone instead of
writing a letter, sending an email will affect the bond of love whereby one will not be able to
reach the other one face to face and this will affect their relationship end breaking. Writing a
letter to someone will strengthen the relationship where one will meet the other face to face, they
share memories and also the moments spent together in their life. Technology has also advanced
and changed relationship whereby one can reach all his/her people and be aware of their status
using cell phones (Hagberg, 2018). Also, technology has improved the relationship whereby
somebody can store pictures or recorded moments on their cell phones or computers.
Technology has many positive and negative effects, on family issues the use of the
internet and other machines by children and teenagers can reduce the time of being together
between them and their parents and this can result to conflicts between them and their parents.
