Running Head: CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Correctional officer as a profession in criminal justice
Introduction
In our societies, law and order must always be maintained. Different people come from
different backgrounds and have different believes and cultural practices. It is required by the law
that each person should respect other people’s beliefs and points of views and beliefs. However,
if this is only said or passed on by the word of mouth, people shall have the tendency of
forgetting or assuming of what was agreed upon. Therefore, most of the countries have adopted a
system of governance where these laws and orders are well stipulated with their consequences in
case a person breaks them. These rules or laws are to be observed by all people of a nation so
that they can live in harmony with one another.
Nevertheless, observance of the stipulated laws must be strictly enforced. The
governments usually set up agencies and institutions to enforce these laws. Such agencies and
institutions are commonly referred to as criminal justice system. Basically, the criminal justice
system will be a series of the institutions whose major objective is to identify and catch criminals
and lawbreakers. They then have to inflict a form of punishment to cause pain to the criminals
and offenders in order to prevent them from repeating the same crime in the future. They are also
responsible for the rehabilitation of these offenders and providing both the moral and
psychological support to revert the offenders back to their normal lives (Callie, & Mary, 2015).
For the purpose of this paper, I shall restrict and focus on my area of interest in criminal
justice as a correctional officer. This is a key area that I am really interested in investigating
more about it to know the requirements, roles, skills and competencies that are needed to be
successful in this career. Remember, a correctional officer is always responsible for supervision,

safety and security of prisoners in a jail. Prison or other custodial places. I really would want to
know how such an innocent person is able to relate and probably interact with offenders some of
whom are murders and other worst crimes. I would really much appreciate learning some of the
challenges a correctional officer faces in his line of duty.
Competencies required for a correctional officer
