Abstract
One of the health concerns of the 21st century is based on poor nutrition choices. In the United
States, there is a rapid increase in the number of young people suffering from conditions
precipitated by poor meal choices. This paper will analyze a research paper presented by students
from the University of Tennessee published in the International Journal of Nutrition and Food
Sciences. The authors researched college students to determine whether body weight was
influenced by the frequency of use of snack vending machines (Sowers et al., 2018).
The problem
College is a transition stage for young adults from living in an environment where rules are set
out for them to one where they set their standards. For many college students, this new found
freedom translates to the adoption of a lifestyle that is less focused on proper nutrition and more
on social activities. These social activities often happen in social settings where the last thing
considered is how healthy the food and drinks being consumed are. The result is a steady decline
in healthy eating habits which lead to one gaining unwanted body weight (Sowers et al., 2018).
Statistics indicate that close to 40 percent of college students are obese or overweight (Sowers et
al., 2018). The result is a rise in the number of young adults dealing with diabetes, heart disease,
some forms of cancer, sexual dysfunction and stroke (Sowers et al., 2018). Young people that
also gain a lot of weight all of a sudden have to deal with the social stigma of being perceived as
unattractive and weak-willed when it comes to food. This can result in mental illnesses like
depression and contribute to low self-esteem (Deans, 2015).
