The rest of the week we will start building a mobile phone app for Android using MIT’s App Inventor. Be sure to check out the MIT APP Inventor website which has many resources and serves as a web based online tool that can be used to quickly create Android Apps without the need of a lot of complex coding. http://appinventor.mit.edu/ It’s a great way to build a quick App for an android phone without the need to know all of the details. The language is based on Scratch, and is a simple “drag and drop” event driven language. Even though it’s simple, you can build quite sophisticated programs. I’ve even had students build simple RPG type games for android tablets/phones using App inventor. It takes some getting used to and some setup to get it to work. It’s great in a pinch if you ever need a quick app and don’t have the time. I’ve posted a link in the content section that has some general information. For this topic, be sure to complete the following: 1. Check out the “Get Started” section further down the page on the app inventor website for an overview; AND/OR if you want to install and setup the emulator if you want to test your apps if you don’t have an Android based phone. Be sure to go through this section to get more familiar with App inventor. If you have an android device, you can transfer your apps to the device to test it (but you may need to enable 3rd party software so be careful what you install). If you don’t have an android device or want to use your own device, just use the emulator instead. 2A. Go through the Tutorial section (http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/tutorials) and complete one of the “Basic” Apps to get a feel for how things work. You can submit in blackboard your final APK file or if you are having problems packaging or running the emulator you can instead submit screen shots of your code and design screen. You may want to complete the HelloPurr example first if you are having problems. Be mindful that your layout is correct, otherwise you may have missing pieces in the blocks editor. 2B. Submit one completed simple app using the submission link in the “Labs/Projects” section by June 13th 3. Next complete one of the Advanced or Intermediate Apps (or a variation/ combination). You can submit in blackboard your final APK file or if you are having problems packaging then you can submit screen shots of your code and design screen. (Due June 13th Submit using in the Advanced/ Intermediate app submission link in the “Labs/Projects” section.
