Description

I have to write the self -assessment. There is a powerpoint that my professor put up about what the self-assessment need to say

For our group, we are deciding that the independent variable is level of fitness in relation to reaction time. Basically, we want to see if the level of physical activity and how often someone exercises will influence an individuals reaction time. This will be researched in relation to central processing, endurance, and our DV which is reaction time!

Our hypothesis is still being composed, but will be something as follows:

The more days a week someone exercises will positively impact and increase reaction time; central processing, muscle flex, and endurance all contributing factors.

Possible confounding variables:

-type of physical activity

-gender

-age

-education

-socioeconomic status

Research Methods Dr. Edgar UMUC PSYC 300 Three General Methods ◼ ◼ ◼ Descriptive Correlation Experimental Descriptive Method ◼ ◼ Definition: Research methods that do not involve the manipulation of an Independent Variable (IV) Purpose: Take advantage of existing data or situations to answer research questions Descriptive Method ◼ ◼ ◼ Advantages: cost/time- efficient, allows for use of existing data or situation without a new data collection effort Disadvantages: may not always have all the information or variables needed Example: Comparing the income of married and unmarried US Citizens using Census data Correlational Method ◼ ◼ Definition: determination of the relationship between two variables, without manipulation of an IV Purpose: make predictions about an outcome given known variables Correlational Method ◼ ◼ ◼ Advantages: allows for control of confounding variables when looking at relationships between variables Disadvantages: uses existing data, with the same potential weaknesses of descriptive data Example: predicting college success using SAT scores Experimental Method ◼ ◼ Definition: manipulating the IV to evaluate the impact on Purpose: to evaluate the relationship between variables in the most controlled way Experimental Method ◼ ◼ ◼ Advantages: allows for new relationships to be examined without the requirement for new data collection Disadvantages: time consuming, expensive Examples: randomly assigning a new medicine (IV) to half a group of cancer patients and evaluating their recovery rate (DV) Research Methods: Hint ◼ Be prepared to define, state the purpose, advantages and disadvantages and give an example in the near future! There are three methods which can be used to write down self-assessment which are namely descriptive,
correlation and finally experimental.
My self- assessment will be based on the correlation method which is used to determine the
relationship between two variables, which takes places without interference and manipulation of the
independent variables. In my self-assessment, the independent variable is the level of fitness which is in
relation to reaction time. The main aim for this assessment is to prove and see if the level of physical
activity and how often if someone does exercise will influence and change an individual’s reaction time.
In relation to a dependent variable which is reaction time, central processing, the endurance to possible
confounding variables, then type of physical activity will have a very great effect on the above variables.
Taking in to consideration the gender, then the despite the person is a land or a man, the more
practice they undertake on certain thing, then their body will have adapted to the practice they are doing
and this will positively impact the reaction of time where it will increase and also their body to endure on
something or the practice they are doing will increase despite the gender and this will not affect the
functionality of their body to withstand a physical workload and recovering in a timely manner.
Also education is another variable which will have an impact on reaction time, the enduranc...
