Education is influenced by conditions in the social, political, and economic aspects of
life. In the 20th century, education was greatly influenced by economic changes, primarily the
Great Depression. The period following the crash of the stock market in the 1930s was
characterized by closure of financial institutions, factories, and businesses. The implication was
massive unemployment, particularly affecting the minorities and the markets were filled with
unemployed people (Skocpol, & Finegold, 2002). The focus of the government was shifted to
relief measures and aid. Education was adversely affected by the social and economic conditions
that followed the Great Depression.
