Introduction regarding disease state
Depression ranges concerning severity. For severe depression, the patients have very
severe symptoms. One of the signs may be excessive sleeping or insomnia. One may also lose
interest in activities that they enjoyed initially. One may also experience hopelessness. A client
may also start having thoughts of committing suicide and may even attempt to commit suicide.
In some cases, the clients may begin having hallucinations or may even have delusions.
Depression is treatable. It is one of the few mental disorders that are treatable. More than 80% of
the people who suffer from it get treatment.
A high-level summary of the patient case
The client is a Hispanic American male who is 32 years of age. He migrated to the US
when he was in high school with his father and the mother died while he was in school. While in
high school he was discriminated against because of being black. He had very few friends. He
has gained weight and also has insomnia for the past six months. He has also been experiencing
some poor concentration at work. A "Montgomery- Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)"
shows that he scored 51 points. This points out that the client has severe depression.
