Foster Uses Metaphors and Similes to Enhance Understanding of Themes
In his book City Terrace Field Manual, Sesshu Foster has employed the use of different
poems to address the various themes in the society. Poetry is an art through which one can
address the pressing issues in the society by adding flavor to them or making them memorable
through creating mental impressions in the intended audience. In his poetry book, Foster
addresses the issues that are faced by people in their everyday life. The themes explored in the
book include violence, immigration, survival, love, and romance as well as race.
Foster has also used various imagery in forms of metaphors and similes to make the
audience relate to his narration. Metaphors and similes are usually used to explain complex
concepts by breaking them up into simple concepts that people understand from their everyday
life. They also add flavor to the narration making it sweet and exciting to the audience. The
similes are formed through direct comparison between different things and are identified by the
