The use of self-disclosure and nonverbal communication behaviors in the work of
human services professionals
Self-disclosure and non-verbal communication play an important role in developing the
therapeutic relationship between the client and the human service professional. The
understanding of client history, past medications, past disease conditions, signs, and symptoms
are important in the human service work (Schneider & Corey, 2015). In order to understand

level of self-disclosure of both the client and the therapist. The therapist also needs to incorporate
self-disclosure, which will guide the client to know the therapists likes and dislikes, as well as
historical experiences, which can control or prevent transference from the client. This is because
lack of self-disclosure causes the client to have many assumptions about the therapist, which
encourages transference (Schneider & Corey, 2015).
