Description

We as a culture are consumers of a range of media from books and magazines to films and TV shows. This project should explore the potentially negative and positive representation of pregnancy, birth and motherhood in the media. You will conduct an archival research project on death or aging. The proposal should be focused on the cultural discomfort or comfort with pregnancy and motherhood issues. This is NOT a review of other people’s research as one might do in a term paper. You will be reading other research for your introduction but then you will conduct your own archival analysis of some body of media like films, children’s books, graphic novels, magazines, TV shows, etc.

Requirements for the project:

1.Choose a topic of interest and think about an appropriate option for studying this topic.Topic examples:

Examples:

A review of books that teach children about birth. The pros and cons.

The representation of pregnant women on television; Is there a high rate of body shaming?

Breastfeeding on sitcoms; what are the underlying messages about breastmilk?

2.Find 5 articles (at least three of these articles must be articles from scientific journals, not articles from magazines) on the particular topic which will be summarized in your paper.A copy of each article must be turned in with the project paper.

3.Based on your readings, design your project.

4.Conduct Your Project.Students should arrange a meeting to discuss project results with the instructor before the presentation on the last day of class.

The project will consist of 5 sections and appropriate graphics presented as a paper and submitted through turn it in.

Section 1.An introduction should be written consisting of a summary of the articles. This will provide the reader with a more extensive background for the topic.

Section 2.This section should focus on the students' project purpose, and the students’ hypotheses. This should include a description of the purpose the project, and the students’ expectations about the project results.

Section 3. Each write-up should describe the method used to complete the project. This will provide the reader with a “how to” framework on the project's design. The materials and procedures used to complete the project should be outlined (include copies if appropriate). This should include a detailed description of the scoring system used to evaluate the media chosen. This is critically important.

Section 4. Each write-up should briefly describe results obtained at the project's completion. This would include any observations made during the project and the totals and averages of the data that were obtained.Graphs and tables should be used to make the results easy to understand.

Section 5.Each write -up should include the students’ reactions and conclusions. This section of the write-up should answer the following questions: Did the results match the hypotheses? What was particularly interesting about the project? How did the project help the students gain understanding of issues in relation to course topics?

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE DOING THIS PROJECT!!

Negative Publication of Pregnancy
Introduction
Putting into consideration the influence that the media both the print and electronic
media there is a common concern of the media portraying pregnancy and childbirth as a
dramatic experience that is painful and risky. This is through the reality Tv shows that are
aired every now and then in the T.V. This has greatly affected the way the society views the
whole experience of being pregnant, giving birth and being a mother (Sears, 2011).
Researchers have identified that the methods of delivery that most women choose are often
influenced by the media. The media usually displays some methods of giving birth as less
painful and risky than others and therefore women tend to be swayed by the opinion of the
media. They also choose where to deliver their babies may it be home or in the hospitals.
This has resulted in there being many child interventions (Morris, 2010).
In most developed countries, women opt to have interventions whereas there is no
evidence to prove that such interventions improve the maternal life quality and the outcomes
of the new-borns. Sometimes, the unnecessary interventions may cause maternal morbidity
for both the infant and the mother, for example, if a woman decides to go for cesarean section
instead of virginal birth out of fear of birth complications, she is at a higher risk of having a
cardiac arrest than that woman who went for virginal birth. The infant, on the other hand, is
more likely to be admitted to the Intensive care unit soon after birth than that child who was
born normally through virginal birth (Arai, 2009). The rise in maternal interventions can be
credited to the negative publication by the media about childbirth.
Purpose
The purpose of the study was to find out whether the media may it be print media or the
electronic media, for example, the television had an influence on the perception of the people
of pregnancy and childbirth. Over the years, it has been noted that they have been a rise in the

levels of birth interventions for women in the U.S and in Europe at large (Han, 2013). There
were speculations that this may be due to the negative publication of pregnancy and
childbirth by the print media. The portray of pregnancy as a phase that makes the body
sluggish and childbirth as a painful experience may be the reason many women are opting to
invite interventions during childbirth. The purpose of this research is to find out which are
some of these interventions that the women are opting to invite and how is this related to the
publication in the media. Some interventions are also feared to cause the mobility level of
the infants and their mothers to rise (Luce, 2016). The research also sought to find out which
are some of these interventions are risky to the life and the health of the infants and that of
the mothers and how the media may have contributed to the popularity of these interventions.
Research Methodology
Research Design
The research design that was mostly employed was the survey research design. The
independent variable to the research was selected and was studied differently instead of
studying them in their natural setting. This lead to a large pool of opinion. The survey design
was the most appropriate design in this case because it allowed me as the researcher to
identify the interrelationship that existed between the variables in my study. It also enabled
me as the researcher to collect large-scale information so that I was able to compare the
variables.
The target population were the pregnant women in the maternity and also the ones
that had given birth recently and were in the maternity ward. The choice of confi...
