Principles of Educational Leadership

Introduction
Effective educational leadership is important in passing quality knowledge, skills and
competence to the learners and transformation of the community. School leaders have a
responsibility in deciding the direction and setting a positive educational culture. School
principals are expected to build a proactive mindset for the learners, support and enhance
motivation and commitment of the staff required to bring improvement and stabilize the school
even in challenging circumstances. The relationship between the school management and the
community has a great potential of promoting education through the building of trust, nurturing
transparency, respect and a shared vision for the community(Leithwood, Harris & Hopkins,
2008). This discussion describes the ability to show the relationship between educational
leadership and the community through experience and research theories.
1. Collaboration with the Faculty and Community For the Improvement of Education
Environment through Collection and Analyzing information
The road to laying the best framework for involving the community in school leadership and
management involves examining historical roles of community participation in education. This
process enables one to determine the strategies and theories that were effective in the past and
the challenges that occurred in the process. Having the past in mind gives the ability to select the
most suitable aspects of education that can be integrated with community values, workforce and
resources to spearhead school development. Various issues such as poverty in developing
countries have resulted in different roles of community participation in education leadership and
management. For instance, poverty in some parts regions, countries and states led to the abolition
of school tuition(Leithwood, Harris & Hopkins, 2008).This scenario implies that distinct

intentions and demands of a particular community determine the direction of its participation in
school leadership roles.
In improving the school’s educational environment, the community assumes the role
substitute role where it replaces the government services because of insufficient support from the
government. The excess demand model can explain this phenomenon where private schools are
an initiative of the community to supplement the need for education and fill the existing gap in
education. The community plays a complementary role in providing alternative systems of
education to the already existing educational system. This is possible through the differentiation
model which assumes that public systems are unable to satisfy the diverse needs of learners. The
diverse needs could comprise linguistic, cognitive or religious(Day, 2011). The quality of
education is realized in its ability to meet the socio-economical differences of learners that can
be properly achieved through complementary leadership. The critical aspect of community
involvement in education is addressing and correcting the problems of school management from
a community perspective. The collaboration exhibited in this sense views the community as a
corrective tool whenever school leadership appears to go astray.
2. Mobilizing of Community Resources by Promoting and Understanding Cultural
Diversity and Intellectual Resources in the School Community
The geographical community in which a school is located comprises of a distinct culture,
language, and ethnic groups. There is the need for rigorous coordination between the school and
the cultural wealth to foster education, as well as, the value of the community's resource heritage.
School leadership and management has the responsibility of appreciating the cultural, language
and ethnic diversit...
