Why Practice Cultural Competence? "Cultural competence means to be respectful and responsive to the health beliefs and practices, and cultural and linguistic needs-of diverse population groups. Developing cultural competence is also an evolving, dynamic process that takes time and occurs along a continuum" (SAMHSA). Culture isn't just based off of what region a person originates from or specifically their race. Culture can influence a person through the age groups they interact with, different genders, a person's sexual orientation, the different locations they get to live in and observe, and professions. When practicing cultural competence, it ensures everyone from the community are represented and included and eliminates unnecessary spending for programs that the community will not participate in. It is crucial to understand the needs and wants of the community and the obstacles they may face to try and make the wanted programs happen. Many people may label themselves under a certain culture, but it can be shown in many different ways and the way follow the cultural norms. It is crucial to remember that cultural competence starts by recognizing that every cultural group brings values that help define the concept of a true community. People who engage themselves in the community and different cultures have greater self-awareness, better understanding of different cultural characteristics of groups, and an increased likelihood of successful interventions and support.
