Description

Assignment 1: PowerPoint Presentation

This assignment requires you to develop a PowerPoint presentation of approximately 8-10 slides synthesizing the key points from your literature review. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you the opportunity to practice presenting your key findings in a similar format that you would be using to present your final proposal and dissertation.

PowerPoint presentations require the ability to select the most relevant material and provide the information in a concise manner. The presentation demonstrates critical thinking, careful word choice, and optimal organization of information to convey the desired content and achieve the best impact on the audience.

This presentation skill is, therefore, important to learn and develop from the beginning of your doctoral program to be able to present successfully during the dissertation defense.

Organize the PPT slides around the following headings:

  • Research Topic and Question (1 slide)
  • Background of the Problem (1-2 slides)
  • Key Findings from the Literature (2-3 slides)
  • Relevance of Literature Findings to Proposed Topic (1 slide)
  • Gaps in Research (1 slide), and
  • Connection of Gaps in Literature to Proposed Study (1 slide)
  • References

Make sure you provide in-text citations for your literature findings and a final References slide.

Keep in mind the slide limit (8-10) is an approximate number that should be adequate to cover the information required in this assignment. However, if you do wish to add a slide or so additionally, please do so. The important point is that you have adequately conveyed the key points from the literature review in your presentation.

Submit your presentation to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned. Name the file W7000_M8_A1_lastname_firstinitial.ppt. Review and comment on the work of others through the end of the module.

All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Please make sure you review the elements of the grading criteria and associated points carefully and make sure your assignment has addressed all the elements and in enough detail to merit full points.

Module 8 Overview

Presented a quote by William Faulkner, Provides the learning outcomes on which the readings and assignments for this module are based.
  • Engage in ethical scholarship and utilize appropriate citation and referencing skills associated with dissertation and scholarly writing to avoid plagiarism/matching text.
  • Apply advanced academic writing skills and the American Psychological Association (APA) style to develop a literature review based on the chosen research question.
  • Incorporate academic writing skills into multimedia presentations.
  • Develop a scholar-practitioner perspective through reading, writing, and reflection.

This is the last module—the end of the course! Soon, you will be checking off, as completed, one more of the 16 courses that you have in your doctoral program.

In this module, you will prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation based on your research topic and literature review. If you are adept and experienced at creating visual presentations, then this assignment should not be difficult. Whether you are an expert or a novice, remember that PowerPoint presentations should extract brief primary concepts from your learning journal and literature review. Do not overload a PowerPoint slide with too many words.

Your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation should outline your research question and key points of your literature review. I hope that you are pleased that you have put forth your best work.

As a good learning opportunity, you will also reflect on what advice you would give to another student who will soon take this course. Try to analyze whether this course has provided you with the foundational skills of academic writing, scholarly inquiry, and ethical scholarship to succeed in the remainder of your program. Keep in mind that this is the beginning of the journey, and you now have the right set of tools in your kit, but allow time and practice to refine, hone, and sharpen those tools during the rest of your program in order to develop a dissertation of sound academic quality and rigor.

Now, close your eyes. Visualize yourself in a cap and gown at graduation, surrounded by your family, friends, and classmates. See yourself accepting your diploma. Hear the presenter announcing, "I present Dr. _____________ (fill in your name)." Hear the applause. Feel the accomplishment. You have earned it!

Note: Students who have been working on their MWL Learning Path should have completed their Mastery Check by now. Keep in mind that students who do not complete the Mastery Check even by the end of the course will be required, by default, to enroll in W5099 Graduate Academic Writing course within the next two sessions. So it is in your best interest to complete all requirements of the W7000 course at the very latest by the last day of the course. If you have not yet, please complete your Mastery Check.

stereotypes experienced by African American
males have on their motivation to seek

levels?

level of African American males in leadership
positions in institutions of higher education
Hughes, 2004; Stanley, 2006).
The positions are held by students from the
white race.
This has painted a picture of racial
discrimination against African American male
students.

According to Jackson (2001), efforts put in by
African American male students towards
attaining leadership positions are not
recognized.
This has made most African American male
students abandon their leadership quests
(Jackson, 2001).
This research thus aims at delving into the
causes of the various stereotypes and bringing
them to the know in a bid to solve the problem.

students that hinder their progress more so in
terms of leadership in these institutions.

Williams & Blackman, 2013).

Black males have even lagged behind their female
counterparts in terms of educational achievements
(Harper, Williams & Blackman, 2013; Frazier, 2009).
