In the contemporary society, the changing workplace environment has led to many
negative effects on the employees. The change in technology, economic upheavals, the everincreasing rate of layoffs and mergers in organizations have all been a traumatic experience to
employees across the world. Stress in workplace results when workers are presented with work
demands and pressures which do not match their skills and abilities hence challenging their
ability to cope. With this, it becomes difficult for employees to manage their roles in the
workplace, a factor that leads to stress and can also lead to violence in some circumstances. This
paper, therefore, seeks to explore the factors which lead to violence and employee stress in the
workplace as well as ethical and legal obligations which employers have in controlling stress and
violence in the workplace.
Factors Contributing to Employee Stress in Workplace
Stress in the workplace results from an interaction of many factors. For instance, the
interaction of the employee and the environment under which one works causes stress to many
workers across the world today. Among the many factors causing stress to employees in the
workplace is pressure. Arguably, the pressure at the workplace has become inevitable due to the
nature of the current work environment where employers strive to achieve a competitive
advantage by overworking their employees. When the pressure is acceptable, it becomes useful
for the organization because it aids in keeping workers alert and motivated. However, when the
