Introduction
The purpose of the program or the initiative is to Improve the patient’s outcomes by
increasing nurses staffing in the hospitals. One of the major challenges that the hospitals are
facing is the difference between the ratio of patients to nurses (Aiken, 2013). This is because
of the increased number of nurses who are heading for retirement. Like in the case of the
United States of America, the baby boomer generation of nurses are heading for retirement
leaving behind gaps that are hard to fill. This if not well taken care of can lead to a crisis in
the U. S healthcare sectors. This paper aims at proposing an initiative that will improve the
patient’s outcomes by increasing nurses staffing in the hospitals.
You will find that there are those patients that need maximum care and with fewer
nurses in the healthcare sector, this cannot be met. You will find that at any given time, the
number of patients in a hospital is higher than the number of a nurse. It is due to this reason
that the nurses must endure long working hours with minimal rest so that they can try and at
least take care of many patients. When the nurses are subjected to long working hours, the
patient’s outcome decreases in great amount and the patient’s expectations and those of the
nursing leaders and the body of nurses are not met (Aiken, 2013). In other words, the nurses
provide substandard quality of work and therefore you will find that in most cases the
patients are complaining about one or two things that did not go right during their time in the
hospital. This calls for an increase in the number of nurses in the healthcare sector so that the
hospitals can be flexible enough to switch the nurses where need be. This will also boost the
caregiving the quality of the nurses in the healthcare sector.
The target population of this program will be the aspiring nurses and the young
nurse’s generation joining various universities and colleges to pursue their nursing carrier. It
has been noted with great concern that the number of nursing students joining various
universities is different from the number of nurses who graduate ones the course duration is

over. This is to show that most of the nursing students are dropping out of their classes to
either pursue other courses or dropping out of the various schools. The program will,
therefore, be aimed at mentoring the aspiring nurses in various schools, colleges and
universities to hold on to their dreams of becoming nurses so that they will not drop out of
schools and leave the healthcare sector at the crisis of replacing the retiring nurses.
The program will also seek to support the nursing practitioners further their studies
and keep up with the trends of caregiving in the healthcare sector to enable them to provide
the best care there can be. This will be made possible by sponsoring refresher courses for the
nurses’ practitioners so that they can keep their knowledge, skills, and abilities up to date
(You, 2013). The program will also aim at sponsoring short-term courses for the nurses who
are aimed at replacing the aging generation of nurses. This will enable the healthcare sector to
maintain the status quo in as far as the care is given is concerned even if the old generation of
nurses go for retire. Further training for the young generation will also be a succession plan
for the nursing organizations as it will prepare the young nurses to fill upper positions ones
they are vacant (You, 2013). It will also prepare them for leadership positions in the
organizations as it will install the necessary Knowledge, skills, and abilities that are necessary
for a nurse leader.
The program will require holding motivational talks in the institutions to help students
change their attitudes towards the nursing carrier. This will call for allowances for the
facilitators of the motivational talks. This will also help the students in the various colleges
and university learn that the nursing profession is a promising profession that is well paying
and can help pay their bills in the future. The sponsorship program that will be one of the
things the program is aimed at doing will also require a lot of money from the organization
and therefore it will be necessary.

The investment on the program is justifiable as in the long run it will earn profit to the
organization. This will come about in the sense that the nurses who are trained are able to
offer better services to the patients. The patients will be in return market the hospital to the
outside world and therefore the hospital will be a step ahead of their competitors and
therefore the organization will recover the money is spent on the training and plow back
profit.
The program will be evaluated since the number of students who enroll in nursing
programs from the high schools the motivational speakers visited during their talks. It will
also be measured by the number of nurses that are able to gain the competence level of the
nurses’ leaders and those that are retiring. It will also be evaluated based on the students who
are able to start the nursing studies in colleges and universities and finish through the
program.
