One of the popular actions of human beings is learning. The process of learning can be
affected both negatively and positively by certain factors and this becomes the major focus of
most behavioral psychologist. The operant and classical conditioning are both important
concepts in behavioral psychology (Mazur & Fantino, 2014). Although the two methods of
conditioning result in learning, their processes are different. This part describes the two
traditional theories of conditioning; the classical and the operant conditioning.
Classical conditioning was first introduced by a Russian psychologist, Pavlov and it
involves placing a neutral signal before a reflex. Classical conditioning focuses on involuntary
automatic behaviors. This conditioning process involves creating an association between a
naturally existing stimulus and a previously neutral one. Pavlov noticed that dogs used to salivate
in response to a particular sound played repeatedly paired with the presentation of food. This
motivated him to do more research on this response of dogs to sounds that been repeatedly paired
with the presentation of food (Gormezano, Prokasy, & Thompson, R. F. 2014).
