ONE Sedona Read the case about Sedona Social at the end of Chapter 8. Then, let’s consider the questions that follow, including looking for information on other social media or travel sites (you don't have to answer every question). The broader topic is how to use social media effectively for business. Shawn Watching the video reminded me of the importance of a business or organization having a social media policy. Corporations have received massive fallout in the past for posting incorrect, disrespectful or distasteful messages through social media. This could be messages approved by corporate staff, or messages sent by the media spokesperson that strayed from the business values or corporate message. This last presidential election has given rise to many instances of messages being sent over social media platforms that were unprofessional or disrespectful. I remember in 2017 the McDonalds twitter spokesperson tweeted a message stating that President Trump was a disgusting excuse for a president and that they missed president Obama (Estepa, 2017.) They claim that their account was hacked, but it could very well have been an employee abusing their platform. In 2014 the Chrysler media spokesperson claimed that they accidentally mixed up their personal and corporate twitter account and sent the following message “I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the motor city, and yet no one here knows how to fu%^ing drive” (Griffith, 2017). This also illustrates the importance of entrusting the right person with your social media platform and ensuring that your social media platforms are secure. As a Soldier in the Army, we must be careful in what we post in social media and ensure that is not anything in violation of DoD policy, and that we speak with our own voice. Often times Soldiers post things on social media that are in violation of DoD policy, or post something that sounds like they are speaking with authority on behalf of the Army when they are not. However, unlike most people, I do not have a Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or Snap Chat account. I am also sure there are many other social media platforms that I am not using that I do not even know exist! I do remember the time before social media exploded; it was a time when you knew less about your coworker’s lives or opinions. Jump forward to today, we have positions at work that deal directly with our social media accounts. These dedicated employees monitor the social media accounts for questions from customers. They also look for negative feedback so they can address it as it comes in. With everyone, or at least most everyone, on social media and the companies having dedicated resources to monitor these accounts, it is inevitable that the lines between work and social life are being blurred. I had not put much thought into the consequences of using social media until last year when one of my coworkers was terminated for making a negative rant on Facebook. Apparently, these dedicated monitors also look for any negative comments about the company from outside our company’s page. After some reading, it appears that there is a right way and a wrong way to make a negative comment about your company to keep yourself protected. According to the National Labor Relations Board, you can be held accountable for your negative comments if they are address to the public and not directly to a coworker as an attempt to improve the working conditions of your company (Social Media, 2013). This seems like such a slippery slope to me, if you make a comment and a coworker responds, you are protected, if they do not respond, you can be terminated. My coworker fell into the second category. He had a bad week at work and went on a multi-hour company bashing tour of Facebook. I am not sure if the company found his post or if someone alerted them to it, but either way, it did end his career. I believe it is difficult for any company to monitor and limit their employee’s social media usage since much of this activity takes place on their cell phone. This brings up another issue I have seen at work that I do not believe is proper behavior. With people on LinkedIn and other sites, it is easy to look for a new job while at work. I personally do not agree with someone using the company’s time to find other employment, but I may be the minority when it comes to this topic. According to Bizzi (2018), looking for a new job might not even be the employee’s goal when utilizing social media at work. Many recruiters send request through Facebook or LinkedIn to connect with individuals with a certain background with the hopes of finding interest. I am not sure about other companies, but our company has recently added a section for social media usage into the employee’s handbook and it does identify job searching as a serious offence. Even with the blurred lines between work and personal time, I think it is important to think about whom you accept into your social network based on the type of information you share. Mcgregor Sedona I certainly don’t envy Sedona’s chamber of commerce media spokesperson. The town attracts many unique groups, all with different and conflicting interests. Most successful tourist destinations cater to the needs of a wide variety of people, or a specific group, but they usually have one solid theme or driving message. Sedona has no defining theme or message, instead it has many. If I were responsible for the town’s social media platform, I would emphasize tolerance and acceptance of the diverse viewpoints and interests of the many groups that come to visit the town. I would be wary of advertising overtly to one group over another as this could potentially alienating other potential business interests. Obviously the town is already known for certain activities, and these groups are already advertising for their interests. Rather than market these activities yourself, I would mediate between the groups and market the city as a unique and diverse outdoor experience that can appeal to many. I reviewed the Sedona chamber of commerce’s twitter feed. I think the most successful thing they did to market the city was post and link to many outside 3rd party reviews of the city and its many experiences. These reviews offered recommendations as to why Sedona is a great place to visit. This is harnessing the power of social media and allowing others to publicize for you in an authentic and believable manner. This is much more effective than if the chamber of commerce had used a traditional sales and marketing approach and advocated for themselves (which they did in one or two posts). I think it acceptable to have an occasional post linking to one of your town’s attractions or illustrate its natural beauty but this should be the exception. The power of social media is that others will enthusiastically market and sell your product for you. Paris Search Facebook for Sedona, Arizona. Examine a variety of Sedona-area pages you find. Using the knowledge of this chapter and your personal social media experience, evaluate these pages and list several positive and negative features of each. Make suggestion on ways they could be improved. While researching different social media pages for Sedona Arizona, I decided to use one website page, Pinterest as a reference of choice. You can always find something on Facebook, as that is the number one social media website. Pinterest is a planned and organized platform in a way that enables users to find required and relevant information with ease and quickness. Information and posts are constantly updated on the media site and photos that are uploaded on Pinterest, emphasizes more on the city and nature that the other websites such as Facebook, that mostly highlights user comments and the like feature. Advertising that is done locally on Pinterest, is more comparable to other social media pages but there are some downfalls to this website. Information that is listed on Pinterest, could possibly be irrelevant and not updated at times. This can be misleading to the user and the user would not be able to gain quality and current information of the city Sedona, Arizona. Also, pages that not regularly updated tend to loose customer’s interest and does not keep them captivated and the owner of the page does not often have blogs, articles or videos. Sedona has quite a number of potentially conflicting community groups. Explain three ways the Chamber of Commerce can use social media to help manage conflict so as to maintain a healthy business environment. A Chamber of Commerce is basically a form of business network that is generally run by business owners in a community such as town, or city, which advocates on behalf of the businesses. The Chamber of Commerce is out there in order to help your business to get the objectives achieved and grow to higher levels. Chambers of Commerce use several platforms for business promotion. The same can be used for conflicts of resolution. For example, 1) Discussion Forums/Social Media – Chambers of Commerce can begin talks on different business subjects via web-based networking media like tv, public forums and internet. These dialogs can make a superior comprehension and scattering of information which can help in settling conflicts; 2) Discussions with opinion makers and leaders – by arranging talks through online life with the opinion makers and leaders of the network, their worries can be tended to and fears can be alleviated. The opinion makers and leaders, once persuaded, can get the message out in their networks, which can bring about determination of contentions; 3) Social awareness Advertisements – Lack of information or open ignorance around an issue is a noteworthy wellspring of contention. For instance, the contaminated fears about a specific kind of industry can be a major wellspring of contention. The chamber of commerce by discharging a social mindfulness advertisement, either all alone or in association with public interest groups, which gives a better understanding of the contamination control standards and how they are being executed can allay the apprehensions and resolve the conflict in a better way. Write a two-paragraph summary of this exercise that you could use to demonstrate your knowledge of the role of social media in commerce in a future job interview. Online networking dislodges numerous highlights of the place in promoting. Here and there places appear to be more engaging in internet based life than, all things considered, and individuals go to those spots to see with their own eyes. That is the thing that makes internet based life so intense and essential to the organizations and networks. Comprehending what to put and what actualities ought to be incorporated, is a decent begin. In the event that someone is searching for an occupation to advance different organizations through web based life, than this would be an awesome activity. Online life impacts everybody, great or awful. Making a decent social media web life can be hard, however never troublesome. The individual responsible for web based life needs to put a considerable measure of thoughtfulness regarding little points of interest if things are turning sour. Regardless of whether things are going great, they should even now put consideration regarding it. This can make them take in the advantages and disadvantages of what they are doing.
