Synopsis
The setting of the play is in Tesman’s living room and a small extra room adjacent to
it. Tesman and Hedda are couples who have just done a wedding and are from their honey
moon. The aristocratic nature of Hedda makes her quite a difficult person to deal with.
Hedda is actually pregnant. In the first scene, Aunt Julle enters the house. However, Hedda is
quite rude to her. It is actually Aunt Julle who had brought up Tesman and even still gave
him financial support from time to time. Mrs. Elvsted also later arrives with the news of
Ejlert’s return. He was a fierce academic rival to Tesman and apparently eyed the same job
vacancy at the local university. Hedda decided to have a private conversation with Mrs.
Elvsted for a while.
Later in the night, Hedda confided in Brack, the local town judge, about her marriage.
She speaks of her dissatisfaction with the relationship despite Tesman’s efforts of buying her
a house. Tesman had thrown a party and Ejlert came as one of the invitees. However, Mrs.
Elvested is against his drinking behavior and thus tries to stop him from indulging. Eljert all
the same promises that he will only party for an hour or two and then just go home. The party
raged on up to the wee hours of the morning. Ejlert ends up dropping his manuscript and
Tesman manages to get it. When Ejlert later confesses to Hedda that he had lost his
manuscript and was planning to take away his life, Hedda encourages her to do so, by ...
