1. What was the main theme or purpose of the readings? What problems or concerns were
identified?
The main purpose of the readings is to address the mistakes that have been made in the course of
America’s history. One of the problems discussed is the forceful deportation of American
citizens that had a Mexican descent. More than one million American citizens were deported to
Mexico in a move that was wrongfully termed as repatriation (returning people to their roots).
President Donald Trump wants to repeat the same mass deportation of immigrants in the United
States and supports other immigration reforms such as building a wall in the Mexican border
financed by the Mexican government. The other problem discussed is the poor treatment of
people that participated in the Seattle strike as workers called for a wage increase.
2. How do the Additional Sources support the chapter?
No additional sources.
3. What were the interactions between “the powerful” and “the people?” What choices did
“the people” have in response to “the powerful?” How did “the people” respond to these
problems?
In both cases, the “powerful” people acted without first consulting the people regarding their
decisions. For instance, in the first case, the government deported hundreds of thousands of
people a move that was illegal since most of the people deported had been born in America. The
people had no choice but to comply with the “powerful” people in government by moving back
to Mexico. People thought that returning Americans of Mexican descent to their native country
was good since this people would get a chance to interact with people that shared their heritage.
In the other case, leaders that were in charge of the strike were jailed for championing for their

rights for better wages. The people were given the choice of stopping the strikes and accepting
the pay they were given but they refused and continued boycotting work. Police officers used
lethal force on protestors and the people responded by killing officers that killed their fellow
protestors.
4. How are the problems identified in the reading similar to problems encountered by “the
people” today? What actions can you take to address or solve these problems today? This is
where you solve modern problems using history as a model.
The problems addressed in the readings are similar to those faced today whereby the federal
government passes laws that are discriminative and do not have the interest of all the American
people. For instance, President Donald Trump wants to rally immigration reforms that will lead
to mass deportation of illegal immigrants. This move will break up many families. To avoid a
repeat of what happened in 1930s, leaders should educate citizens on the negative impact of
forceful immigration. In 1930s, people were blinded with wrong information that immigration
