HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020
According to the World Health Organization, good health is a human right and
is directly linked to the social and economic development of a society. As such,
various health promotion initiatives have been developed to foster health
improvement, decrease the inequities experienced in the health sector, build the social
capital and to advance social capital (WHO, 1997). The need for such initiatives
cannot be undermined because health is dependent on various factors that are
constantly changing and variable form one country to another. These include
behavioural, social and biological changes such as the increased resistance of the
human body to antibiotics and demographic trends like urbanization. Access to media
and technological equipment, international trade, the financial markets, and
environmental degradation also play a major role in health promotion across the
globe. Therefore in achieving this, there should be harmonious participation between
governments, non-governmental organizations, media and other industries.
Programmes developed should be aligned to the local needs and demographics of the
people both socially, culturally and economically (WHO, 1997). Healthy People 2020
