Introduction
Many definitions of leadership exist; it is defined as the attempt to influence the activities
of others by communicating with the aim of guiding them in the attainment of certain goals. It is
also described as the process that influences the activities of a given organized group with the
aim of achieving certain goals (Omolayo, 2007). It is based on a complex relationship between
individuals and relies on trust, commitment, and having a shared vision. An individual such as a
CEO or a country’s leader establishes a given course that should then be followed, and
individuals or countrymen then follow along with them in the said direction with dedication. An
effective leader is one that can influence in the desired manner and achieve a set of desired goals
(Nanjundeswaraswamy and Swamy, 2014). It is evident through the descriptions it is evident that
leadership involves the process of influence, and in organizations, it is what enables those in
leadership positions to guide their teams to do the things they are supposed to do in a willing
manner and also ensure the said activities are well executed.
Influence Processes
Influence can broadly be defined as the power that is exerted by an individual on others
to effect some change. With influence people's behavior can be manipulated, the goals, attitude,
their values or needs. Influence is, therefore, an essential part of leadership without which the
former would not exist. A leader, therefore, has to have some form on an impact on those that he
or she leads. Various influence processes can be employed by leaders to change people's
behavior and would vary depending on the situation. Leaders use some influence tactics; they
include rational persuasion which is by using logical arguments and evidence that is factual. A
consultative approach is also used and it is when the leader engages the team in planning a given
strategy, a change in their operations and so on (Yuki and Tracey, 1992). An inspirational

appeal can also be used and it is when a given person uses an appeal that targets to arouse ones
enthusiasm by appealing to one's values. Personal appeal is the strategy where one appeals to
one's feelings of loyalty and the relationship with the individual (Yuki and Tracey, 1992). A
coalition approach is one that targets and uses the others or their aid to help one agree to what
they want or what others desire. Influence can also be affected by the use of pressure where an
individual uses threats or lays out specific conditions and demands, or persistent requests to
make others do what they want (Yuki and Tracey, 1992). Other approaches include legitimating,
and ingratiation.
Role of Influence in Contemporary Leadership
In today's environment both in the places of work and in the political field, various
approaches are applied by leaders in influencing contemporary leadership. In transformational
leadership the leaders by aligning the goals that are given to the employees to those of the
leaders. The employees are influenced to focus on the overall organizational performance and
well-being as opposed to what will benefit them on the personal level. A transformational leader
uses various strategies in, and they include their charisma, intellectual stimulation, inspirational
