Description
Steroids and Behavior
In this assignment, you will be provided a fictitious study.
*Look at the STUDY ATTACHED*
- Enter the data from the given study into Minitab.
- Look at the variable values and read the descriptions of the variables. Which values appear to be unrealistic?
- Note: You must change the variable names to eight characters or less. Do these values have anything in common?
- Use Minitab to obtain the descriptive statistics.
- Save the Minitab data sheet to a file and submit it with the final document. Eliminate the unrealistic values from the analysis by deleting the data for those values and use an asterisk (*) for missing variables.
- Why do you think these values are unrealistic?
- Run the descriptive statistics again and then write a statement on what the eliminated values had in common. Would it be acceptable to eliminate these values from the study you would like to publish? Include the two results files and your comments about what the values had in common and prepare a report in a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document.
- Support your responses with examples.
- Cite any sources in APA format.

Steroid Usage: The number entered reflects the number of weeks on steroids.
Grip Strength: The number registered on a hand meter. The larger the number, the stronger the
person; the scale cannot go higher than 100.
Aggression: The number obtained on the McGuthry Aggression Inventory. The higher the
number, the more aggression; the scale goes from 5 to 30.
Happiness: The number obtained on the Happiness Scale. The higher the number, the happier
the person is; the scale goes from 0 to 15.
Investigator: The number assigned to the person who assessed the participant.

Do you use probability in your profession or real life? You most likely do without consciously knowing it. Share one example of how you have used probability in your life. Who can help?
Applying Quantitative DesignThis week marks a turning point in your research simulation. In previous weeks, you took steps to define your research question, you anticipated possible ethics concerns, and you made preliminary decisions about the participants and location of your “study.” This week, using the information from the assigned readings and the “Applying Quantitative Design” worksheet, modify your research simulation so that it uses a quasi-experimental design. This worksheet includes specific tasks to help you try out the application of a qualitative design using a safe and guided process. Your tasks range from deciding and participants and data collection procedures to defining variables to evaluating study limitations. For this Assignment,Use the document below which you will use to record your responses.
This week, you studied the major principles of quantitative
research designs. One of the quantitative designs used in early childhood is
the quasi-experimental design. In this part of your research simulation you are
asked to pretend that your study will use such a design. The document below
will guide you through this simulation, by asking you to respond to specific
tasks related to this design type. Once your responses are recorded, you will
have successfully defined the major elements necessary to begin a
quasi-experimental study.
In preparation for this Assignment, carefully study the two online readings of Week 5,
“Introduction to Variables” and “Overview of Quantitative Designs.” Ground your
responses in the content of these readings.
My Research Question:
TASKS
For this
simulation, assume you will conduct a quasi-experimental study. You will
collect the data either through interviews or direct observation.
YOUR RESPONSES
State your research
question which you developed in Week 4 one more time: Either use the same
question, modify it, and/or narrow it even more (Remember: For use in a
quasi-experimental study, your research question needs to be specific enough
so that you can turn it into a hypothesis. Feel free to modify your original
question to fit this requirement.)
Decide on the study
participants and the sampling process (Remember that this is a
quasi-experimental study, i.e., random assignment or random sampling is not
possible)
State your
independent variable (i.e., what will the “treatment” be, what will one group
experience or possess that the other one will not)
State your
dependent variable (i.e., what will you measure, what outcome do you expect)
State a hypothesis
based on your research question (Remember: A hypothesis is an explanation of
something observed or a prediction of something we expect. Make sure you
state the hypothesis so it expresses an anticipated relationship between the
independent and the dependent variable)
Of the two data collection
methods you studied this week (interviews and direct observation), decide
which one you would use in this research simulation, and what are reasons for
your choice?
From the four
assumptions of quantitative designs (i.e., objectivity, reductionism,
reliability, generality) choose one and explain how you would make sure that your study meets this
assumption
Now that you have
finished this simulation, what limitations do you perceive in the way you
have designed this study, i.e., what problems can you already anticipate
(Note: Your knowledge about study limitations is still very limited. You are
not expected to provide an exhaustive list of such limitations. However,
considering what you studied about extraneous variables, sampling issues, or
assumptions of quantitative designs, you are expected to demonstrate
awareness of limitations by describing at least one challenge to your study)
