Eating disorders refer to conditions characterized by abnormal eating habits. The most
common manifestation of eating disorders is by eating too little food and eating too much
food in a short time. These are medically referred to as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
respectively. They are caused by a multitude of factors including genetic factors and societal
pressure on physical attributes.
Eating disorders have emerged to become the most challenging mental issues in
adolescents of the modern times. I selected this topic because I know for sure this is a big
problem. I already have a couple of friends suffering from it and they have not gotten any
help because the society has normalized the condition or because no one thinks it is abnormal
to warrant professional intervention. I also selected this topic because most teenage girls are
suffering in silent without help. They are struggling day and night to remain thin because of
the pressure exerted on them by their peers and the society at large. I think it is time this
problem was given attention to stop it from escalating further.
Through my research, I have learned that eating too little food or too much food is not
normal but it is actually a medical condition that can be treated. The research has enabled be
understand the causes of eating disorders and looking back I see a lot of adolescents living in
the middle of risk factors. Additionally, I have learned that there is a treatment for eating
disorders. Perhaps what I intend to do with this new insights is to figure out how to enable the
society to get informed as I have about eating disorders. In future, I intend to be a good parent
by monitoring the eating habits of my children so that they do not fall victims. I will also help
my friends and people around me get this information to help themselves and those they care
about.

Introduction to mental health
According to WHO, mental health refers to a state of wellness in which a person
knows his/her abilities, has the ability to manage normal stress, is able to work fruitfully and
productively, and make positive contribution to the community in which he/she is a member
(Michaud & Fombonne, 2005). While it may be difficult to apply this definition to children
and adolescents, generally, mental health refers to the state of wellness in which the child
knows his/her strengths and uses them ...
