Description

The Applied Final Project consists of two sections: five Scrapbook Chapters and a reflection paper. You will choose five theoretical perspectives from the eight weekly content perspectives presented within the course to inspire the creation of five Scrapbook Chapters. The reflection paper completes the "scrapbook," demonstrating insight and the application of course content to personal learning.

Attached are the five chosen theoretical perspective that will make up the five scrapbook chapters. I have also attached links underneath each perspective, these links are just to provide you with some background infromation on each topic. Please do not actually use them in this paper as my professor wants all new resources.

Power Steer
By Michael Pollan

It is understandable, owing to the fact that ranch cattle are often put on a corn diet that
antibiotics be integrated in the process if the antibiotics are but a solution to the acidosis
problem. The essence of antibiotics use is essentially to keep the animals healthy and ensure that
the animals can at least live long enough in spite of the fact that acidosis is a common occurrence
once animals have been on feedlot for a while. Animal feed comprises of antibiotics to hasten the
fattening process of cattle. The problem however, is the fact that the antibiotics and residues of
hormonal implants become evident in the meat that we purchase from supermarkets. More so, it
antibiotics feed to the animals as a way to keep them safe could inevitably be the very downfall
of the humans. Perhaps the reason the European Union remains adamant in the plight to ban beef
from animals that had been implanted is due to the fact that there could be impeding health and
physiological risks to the humans who consume the beef thereof.
Albeit the fact that the antibiotics seem like an advantage rather than a contributor to the
predicament, the inevitable truth was that, the fact that the residues could show up in the beef we
consume as humans could affect our health in the long run owing to the fact that a microbial
ecosystem exist in humans as it does in the cattle thereby asserting the truth of the notion that we
are indeed what we eat. The manure exhibited by the cattle comprised of the Escherichia coli
0157 bacteria. Sadly, that widens the realm of possibilities for human beings being infected.
Albeit the fact that the cattle industry considers that the cattle’s feeding can be altered and the
cows fed hay as opposed to corn an impractical notion, perhaps James Russel a U.S.D.A.
microbiologist proposes a solution that we as the consumers ought to think about much as we
should on the elements of the diets we consume.

Chris Deutsch’s interview
The Food industry (Meat production)

In the 20th century meat production has become a political topic. Although an ecological
relationship exists between humans and animals, the issue of cattle being fed corn is still a
predicament years later after the end of the World War II. The issue of meat is now heavily
politicized, and thus owing to the political nature of meat production the European Union and the
United States of America’s Food and Drug Administration and the Department of
Agriculture clash most notably on the use of hormonal implants based on the health risks that
are associated with such techniques. Based on the fact that companies in the contemporary
societies now own the entire system; a vertical integration as Chris notes, the ideology
surrounding production of beef is to do so in the fastest manner possible and because of this the
use of corn as opposed to grass remains a preferable option for many operating in the business.
This need was prompted by the Second World War in which the need was to ensure that
there was production of enough food to feed the allies, populous and the armies therein. Thus,
food production and specifically meat production was intensified for this reason. The political
aspect of meat production has been evident since the presidency of Truman and Nixon amongst
others. Even at the time, policies that were meant to promote more production and consumption
of meat whilst shielding against economic and ecologic consequences that may arise thereof
were developed. Corn is fed to cattle with the sole intention of ensuring beef could be produced
in mass and in a cheap manner albeit the fact that farmers have remained aware of the fact that it
is and still is detrimental to feed cattle whole grains devoid of roughage.
