Interviews are used in identifying the best candidates for a particular job or for extracting
specific information from a group of people at different intervals. Two main types of interviews
have been used for a long period in discussions. These types include Structured and unstructured
interviews. This discussion will provide the differences between the two types of the interviews.
Structured interview
A structured interview is one of the commonly used types of interview that many
individuals, reporters, human resource managers and business to carry out personal interviews.
This type of discussion uses a particular fixed format where questions are set and prepared in
advance. The questions are prepared in a particular manner that will help the interviewer to
obtain the information without creating an interrogation mood that would upset the interview.
Structured interviews uses highly systematized techniques and equipment for recording the
interview (Dipboye, 2014).
Again, the structured interview is a method used for quantitative research for the survey.
Quantitative techniques are used for various purposes. The major purpose for quantitative survey
interview is to ensure that each interview is offered with similar questions which must be
arranged in a particular order. The order of the questions helps in recording and sharing of the
information gathered more easily confusion is minimized and the interview is made easier and
quicker (Miller, 2016). This interview is also known as a patterned interview or a planned
