Week Three

This is where you will find the discussions for Week Three.

Remember that the evaluation guidelines are to begin early in the week, be frequent (which means doing more than the minimum, post on three or more days during the week) and write substantive posts (which means more than simple agreements) that add to the body of knowledge. Posts that can be read as simple agreements and/or repetitive of the original post will not earn points.

Posts on Sunday will not count as significantly, regardless of the number of posts; so don't wait to post.

WEEK THREE, TOPIC 1

Unlocked: Monday, July 2, 2018 12:01 AM EDT - Sunday, July 8, 2018 11:59 PM EDT.

Watch an American theatrically released live-action film made in the last 25 years from one of the following genres – Melodrama, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror or Comedy. No animated films or documentaries. It cannot be from the genre that your favorite movie is from (or the genre you told us was your favorite in week one). If you neglected to respond to that discussion, you must include it here to be credited for this discussion.

Number your answers and place on separate lines.

1. What does it have in common with the films of that genre in the week three content? (These films are at the bottom of the list on the Week Three Learning Resources link).

2. How is the film different?

How does sound play a part in the film you watched? Identify at least 3 scenes when sound (not silence) stands out in the film. Do not include dialogue. Do not repeat sounds/music. If you use music for one entry, select other sounds for the additional entries. Detail each sound. Don’t just classify it, describe what we hear. And then explain what and how it communicates.

Number each scene (3-5) and place on separate lines with your responses.

Respond to at least two of your classmates. This represents the minimum effort, equivalent to 70% when also meeting the requirements noted in the forum.

Spell-check and proof your posts. This will count in your assessment.

WEEK THREE, TOPIC 2

Unlocked: Monday, July 2, 2018 12:01 AM EDT - Sunday, July 8, 2018 11:59 PM EDT.

Censorship in film has played an important role in commercial moviemaking.

Number your answers.

  1. Do you think the film you watched for this week’s first discussion question would have been allowed to be released with the same content in 1950? Why or why not?
  1. Do you think the film you watched for this week’s first discussion question would have been allowed to be released with the same content in 1980? Why or why not?

This will speak to different rating structures (Production Code and the MPPA Ratings) in place during those different years.

You'll need to do some research on rating systems to answer this question.

Respond to at least two of your classmates. This represents the minimum effort, equivalent to a 70% when also meeting the requirements noted in the forum.

Spell-check and proof your posts. This will count in your assessment.

It cannot be from the genre that your favorite movie is from (the film you told us was your favorite in week one). If you didn't respond to the Introduction Discussion in Week One, you will have to identify your favorite film/genre here to be credited for this discussion. This will also impact last week's response, which assumed that first week participation.

Number your answers and place on separate lines.

  1. What does it have in common with the films of that genre in the Week Four content? Be specific! Use the Week Four Learning Resources Link bottom of the list.
  2. How is the film different? Be specific.
  3. How does Cinematography or Special Effects play a part in the film you watched?

  2. How do they communicate what you suggest?

Respond to at least two of your classmates. This represents the minimum effort, equivalent to 70% when also meeting the requirements noted in the forum.

Materials posted after Wednesday night are too late for instructor review.

Samples must be posted before your final submission to your assignment folder to earn credit.

For this discussion, you will only need 3 posts to earn all of the points. Your 3 posts will include your main post [Paper One paragraph(s)] and 2 substantive classmate reviews.
