Weekly Paper Instructions Weekly papers are a major component of this course and make up 40% of your grade. These assignments require that you synthesize course material and think critically about course themes. There are very specific requirements for each paper, and it is important that you follow all of the instructions. You will receive a question at the beginning of the week. The questions are intentionally “big questions.” There are several approaches and “right answers.” You must bring a draft of your thesis statement to class on Wednesday (Thursday during the 4th of July week). You will workshop your thesis statement in small groups. Thesis statement: Answer the question in 25 words or less The thesis statement should make an argument that the rest of your paper defends. The best thesis statements are direct, succinct, and clear. Body: Explain and defend your thesis statement in no more than 250 words. This is the most important aspect of the paper. It should be written in the tone of a formal academic essay. Grammar and spelling impact your grade, so make sure you proofread your paper prior to submission. A good paper cites course material in order to make an argument. An excellent paper applies course material to the question in ways that demonstrate understanding of the weekly theme and the ability to apply the concepts. Instructions & Formatting: Each paper must include the following information: -Name -Thesis statement with number of words written in parenthesis at the end. The thesis sentence should be the very first sentence and set apart from the body of the paper. -At conclusion of document, write how many words are in the paper (do not count the thesis statement in this) -Use parenthetical citations when citing sources. Only use sources from the syllabus or scripture. Ex: (Johnson, 108). -Papers are due by the start of class on the final class of the week (normally Thursday, with the exception of Friday, July 6). Upload the paper in a word document to canvas prior to 1:00 pm. Late papers receive a 10 point deduction. -Since page length is not an issue, there is no need to get creative with font or spacing. Use 1 inch margins, double spaced, 12 point font (A standard academic font like Times, Cambria, Baskerville). Example: Question: “Why should students write weekly papers?” Thesis: Students should write weekly papers in order to synthesize course material and think critically about major theological themes. (18 words) The body of the paper then argues for 2 points: 1) Weekly papers help students synthesize course material 2) Weekly papers help students think critically about major theological themes
