During the trial process, there are some obligations that an accused person is entitled to
under US law. The law provides the right of an accused person to defend themselves, to not
incriminate themselves, and to avoid being tried more than once for the same offence
(Findlaw.com, 2018). An accused person is also entitled to a trial before an impartial jury in the

If the accused is deaf, it poses a challenge for the court and the attorneys because such
defendants are a minority. This can put the defendant at a disadvantage with a high risk of being

found guilty of a crime that one never committed. Seeing that the deaf form a minority in
criminal cases, officers of the court lack adequate experience on how best to make a legal
decision that affects them. One of the reasons for this is the lack of familiarity with laws
