Week 1 Discussion Forum: Citizen's Arrest? To Catch a Predator NBC Dateline's "To Catch a Predator" worked as a wall” with law enforcement and advocacy groups in an attempt to break into the world of online sexual predators. The show, which broadcast every step of the investigation process, trolled for men who engaged in sexually charged online chats with minors, then invited them to a face-to-face meeting, supposedly at the child's home. NBC AT EDATON The kids weren't home, but the suspects didn't know that when they walked into a kitchen and came face to face with reporter Chris Hansen. The TO CATCH conversations were recorded by a bevy of hidden cameras, and the men were met by law enforcement officers once DATELINE they left the house. The show garnered top ratings and was seen as a breakthrough in reality/advocacy reporting. But it was also criticized as well by those who questioned this blending of reporters, “watchdog" groups and police -- and claimed that the program crossed ethical lines. A PREDATOR DISCUSSION: Where do you draw the line? What is the role of the media, advocacy groups, police and audience participation here? Does this show cross ethical boundaries in terms of news coverage? What should be done to achieve the greater good? DISCUSSION
Children are innocent souls and as such should be protected at all costs. When a
group of professionals comes together to make society better especially for the safety of
the younger one then I feel that we can do away with the line and work as a team. Society
becomes a much better place when people from all walks of life work together for the
greater good and that in my opinion is our sole purpose in life.
The show ‘To Catch a Predator’ is a collaboration of NBC, the police as well as
the advocacy group; Perverted Justice. Members of the advocacy group pose as child...
