What were the major causes of the Great Depression?
The Great Depression was a decade-long period of economic and social turmoil not
just in the US but also across other developed countries, particularly in Europe. Although
highly linked to the 1929 stock market crash, there are many other factors that lead to the
Depression. First, there were widespread bank failures with close to 1000 banks closing
down. This sent a wave of panic with people withdrawing their money for fear of losing it.
There was no federal deposit insurance. Many people lost their money. Secondly, the SmootHawley Tariff attracted stiffer retaliation from US’s trading partners that worsened things.
Thirdly, there was a long period of drought which affected farming and created massive dust
storms (Bernanke, 1983).
