Tax deductions on a non 501c3 church

timer Asked: Feb 6th, 2013

Question Description

The second part of this year we joined a small church in Texas.  We learned that they are not yet a 501c3.  My CPA and some research I did says that we can't use our contributions as a deductible charity item.  However some church members who go to H&R Block say all you need is a contribution statement from the church.  So I am hearing conflicting info.  I did our preliminary taxes on Turbo Tax and it makes a huge difference if we use it or not to reduce our taxable income.
