HIST 101 Res Gestae Divi Augusti and Suetonius on Caligula Discussion
Compare the “Res Gestae Divi Augusti” to the “Suetonius on Caligula”. How is the power of the emperors portrayed? Are there significant differences from Augustus to Caligula? Why?
Please could you reply to this person:
Augustus and Caligula were some of the most famous rulers of roman when it was an empire. The two leaders are responsible for making Rome one of the most powerful empires in history. Both emperors had unique ways of leadership with some similarities and differences, as discussed below.
The texts portray Augustus as a very clever and efficient ruler. He was just and compassionate, which is shown when he spared the lives of people seeking refuge in his territory. Additionally, Augustus was a morally strong individual. He acquired his emperor title by working for it after Marc Anthony’s defeat. Besides, Augusts refused to give in when he was lured into becoming a dictator by some of the consuls.
Caligula was also an intelligent and ambitious leader whose actions had huge impacts on the lives of Romans. He was admired by most of the people under his rule. Given that Caligula was raised with soldiers from a young age, they loved him and respected him. However, he was an unpredictable leader. “Caligula restored treason trials and put a lot of people to death.” Besides, he murdered a soldier after seducing his wife and sentenced to death anyone who talked ill of the incident. His leadership was full of cruelty and promoted a lot of fear among the people.
There are many significant differences between Augustus and Caligula, mostly in their form of leadership. While Augustus was compassionate and spared people's lives, Caligula was much of a monster and killed many people. Augustus was loved and respected by the people, while they feared Caligula. During his rule, Augustus restored peace in Roman while Caligula brought back instability. Moreover, Augustus transformed Rome from a republic to an empire, making him a more successful leader than Caligula.
In conclusion, Augusts and Caligula were both powerful roman emperors. Augusts is remembered for his compassion and making Rome an empire. Caligula brought back terror and fear among the people.
