1. Define race and ethnicity. Explain the difference between the two terms.
Race refers to a group of people who share similarities and differences in
biological traits that are deemed to be socially significant by the society (Spencer, 2014).
Ethnicity refers to shared perspectives, practices, and distinctions that set people of
different group apart. Race is the physical characteristics of someone whereas ethnicity is
the cultural characteristics of someone.
2. In detail, explain what is meant by “social construction of race.”
Social construction of race implies that race is not a biological factor but rather it
is a social construct (Spencer, 2014). This implies that there is no gene or cluster of genes
that are common all blacks or all whites. Social construction supports the fact that there is
no link between race and genetic formation.
3. Define the terms minority group (subordinate group) and majority group (dominant
group).
A minority group also referred to subordinate group is a category of people who
hold less control of power or influence as compared to dominant group. On the other
hand, majority group hold more power and control over the minority group. The different
between the two groups are in terms of power and control they hold in the society.
