Causes of World War I and U.S Entry
World War I originated in Europe on July 28. 1914 and lasted up to November 11, 1918.
The U.S entered the war several years later on April 6. 1917. World War I resulted in several
deaths and destruction across the nations (Remak, 1967). This paper analyzes the causes of
World War I and U.S entry into the war.
Causes of the World War I
Franz Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria-Hungary. Franz was shot dead on June 28
in 1914 at Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip who had ties with a secretive military known as the Black
Hand. Gavrillo was a Serbian. Before the war, troubles, and tension began in Europe by the
emergence and existence of group alliances between several powers. The agreements led to the
formation of two groups from the six powers. According to Langer (1977), France, Britain, and
Russia grouped to form the Triple Entente. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the
Triple Alliance.
Political instability in Serbia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina had endangered the alliances. The
Serbian nationalist's aim of the assassination was to stop Austria-Hungarian rule over Bosnia and
Herzegovina. Austria had tricked Russia and taken over Serbia during negotiations. The killing
spurred the World war as the Serbian government was blamed for the death. The following
month, July on 28, of that same year 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The
German government supported Austria-Hungary as Great Britain, Russia, France, and Belgium
backed Serbia as the war began (Remak, 1967).
The assassination of Franz was the primary cause, but several other factors led to the war
including the system of alliances. The Triple Alliance and Triple Entente were defensive groups.

Therefore, conflict with one member meant support from the others in the group. Germany had
experienced war twice before the July 1914 war, therefore, had to support Austria-Hungary.
During the second Moroccan crisis, the Germans felt humiliated as they agreed to leave Morocco
to France. Thus, Germany supported Austria-Hungary to avoid humiliation (Berghahn, 1973).
Russia had a rivalry with Austria-Hungary over the Balkans. Britain and Germany fought over
their economic power and navies. Germany and France fought over Alsace region due to the
border. The assassination began the war, but the rivalry between the alliances contributed
significantly to its rise and duration it lasted.
