Countries
Introduction
The Traded Related Intellectual Property (TRIPS) Agreement has been a contentious issue. It
came about as a part of the Uruguay Round. It was this committee that also created the World
Trade Organization (WTO). The TRIPs is included as an annex to the WTO agreement as is also
the case for General Agreement on Tariffs and General Agreement on Trade in Services. This
agreement created a bare minimum in standards with regards to intellectual property for all
nations that were member states to the WTO (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2015). Furthermore, it
created an enforcement strategy, civil and administrative, that are applicable. The introduction of
this agreement brought about a shift in the trading system internationally. Consequently,
international property rights went from being outside the prerogative of the trading institutions to
being the fundamental standing in the trading system globally. There have been various schools
of thoughts on this issue. Some observers viewing this as a positive thing that will improve
protections for intellectual property and goods which is becoming vital to the international trade
in the foreign markets. However, some critics are against it, that the TRIPS agreement is
