Description

Read the referenced article below, and assess whether or not this effort by the European Union has merit and whether or

not this effort will be effective.

If you deem that the effort will not be effective, explain what you would do differently and why. Also, through additional

research, explain whether or not the solar energy industry is an infant industry. Are there any additional protections that you

would create for the European Union?

SOLAR FLARES: TRADE

European Union has been leading a move towards shutting down the Solar Flare trade with
China taking a look at the imports (Butler, 2012). It was in September 2013 when the European
Union launched one of the biggest ever investigation that probes Euros in billions hailing from
the exportation of Solar equipment by China. European Union’s Trade Commissioner Karel De
Gucht imposed on the country’s solar panel’s exportation saying that the provisional duties
averaging 47 percentile ought to be imposed on the nation’s exports for selling and dumping
products that were below cost, in Europe continent. This Solar case might hand Brussels leverage
to forcing Beijing to the bargaining bench. But, also there might accrue unintended implications
(Chaffin, 2013).
This move by the EU does not hold any merit since it shall backfire by pushing up the solar
equipment costs for the consumers and result in undermining the industry which has already in
pressure coming from Europe. This class by Brussels and China does not resonate because tariffs
implementation insinuates more damage unto Europe than China. European Union is in efforts of
moving a campaign forward on sweeping away all the illegal channels used by the various
governments inclusive of cheap financing, lands and even raw materials. Contrary to the
expectations held by the European Union, the move to shutdown Solar Flares will boost the
exports from China (Butler, 2012).
According to economists, most of the small Companies in Europe installing Solar panels on
rooftops and buildings will have sparked a rise in the duties/prices hence resulting in the
destruction of their businesses. The benefit as claimed by one trade lawyer called Konstantinos
Adamantopoulos is keeping of the solar jobs by the Chinese.
