Conflicting Viewpoints Essay
Question one
The topic that I have selected is ‘Should Illegal Immigrants be Integrated into the wider
American culture and granted citizenship?’ I feel that the illegal immigrants should be
assimilated and integrated into the broader American society. It is a topic that I have thought
about for a long time and having interacted with immigrants, I have come to realize they reflect
the heritage of this nation. While there are valid reasons as to why the illegal immigrants should
not be welcomed into the American nation, the pros outweigh the cons. I have been raised in a
mostly migrant neighborhood, and each day I see their contribution to the shared ideals of
America, and from such experiences, I have come to have a conviction on my position.
Question two
The three premises that support my position are:
The illegal immigrants contribute to the revenue of the country. Unlike some of the contradicting
arguments in circulation, the illegal immigrants are not dependents of the American citizens. The
illegal immigrants have to pay for any goods and services that they utilize, and this means that
they contribute to the revenue available to the government. Through the immigrants, companies
can make more sales, which translates to more taxes being given to the government.
Secondly, the immigrants have been a source of low labor costs to most industries in the US.
Without the topic of equal pay arising, the immigrants, because of their aspiration to share in the
American Dream, coupled with limited opportunities take up the jobs most Americans would
frown at. Furthermore, they also take up jobs which would require more wages if taken up by the
Americans, thus saving up the production costs of the goods and services. The immigrants are
