Online Learning and Performance
Ferguson, J. M., &DeFelice, A. E. (2010).Length of online course and student satisfaction,
perceived learning, and academic performance. The International Review of Research in
Open and Distributed Learning, 11(2), 73-84.
The authors deduce that it is advantageous to learn through online than face to face
learning. This is because students are entitled to do other things in the corporate world.
The authors suggest that when one reads via online, they are able to research more and
online learning is done when one is willing and ready to learn. It is evident that when
one is willing and has time to learn, he will be able to understand more and thus is
subjected to higher performance. The author through the research has shown that online
learning boosts performance than face to face learning.
Hoskins, S. L., & Van Hooff, J. C. (2005). Motivation and ability: which students use online
learning and what influence does it have on their achievement?. British journal of
educational technology, 36(2), 177-192.
Hoskins and Van Hoof did a research on what motivates students and they realized that
majority of the students prefer online learning. The course tools (WebCT) that supported
biological psychological unit through data collection showed that students who were
doing online questions used to pass. This is an indication that online learning is much
better than face to face learning. They showed that the students often researched and
learn more about the questions and thus excelled in more on exam questions. Another

Xu, D., &Jaggars, S. S. (2013). The impact of online learning on students’ course outcomes:
Evidence from a large community and technical college system. Economics of Education
Review, 37, 46-57.
According to the authors who carried out research on 34 colleges, they show that there is
a wide difference between the face to face learning students with those who are oriented
in the online learning program. They show that online learning program students excel in
their exams and are more knowledgeable. This is because the face to face students
usually depends on the lecturers while online students research from various sources.
They tend to learn more and are exposed to more ideologies. This makes them have the
capacity to pass their exams and thus are said to experience higher performance in their
course. On their resolution, they advocate institutions to venture more in online learning
and provide a higher capacity for it.
