Abstract
In information systems, a fundamental responsibility of any management of an
organization is the adequacy of security ring-fencing its Information. The information could be
in the form of financial data, privacy, safety as well as other forms of authentication and
authorization to secondary systems. Access control, therefore, is more involved in allowing
legitimate actions or activities, scrutinizing every attempt of users of any system when they try to
use any resource of the particular system. Some systems may allow simple authentication control
methods while others are the more sophisticated e.g. use of a multi-character password.
Organization keen on the security of their systems will implement their access control with three
abstractions namely Policy, Model and Mechanisms.
The University of North Texas has a strict number of policies for its Access control safeguarding
their students, faculty, staff, and visitor’s information as well as property.

Application of Policy
The University of North Texas has a general policy which ensures that only the UNT
staff and students have passwords and keys to access their systems and information or property
at any given time. The approval of these keys arises after the user has signed the Request form
for such and when their use is no longer needed the account is deleted together with the
credentials.
