Interviewing a Professional in Purchasing and Supply Management
Introduction
Purchasing and supply management is critical to the success of any company. Through
this essential department, an organization can reduce its overhead costs by procuring highquality products at the best market prices. Prudent purchasing ensures that a company has a
constant supply of the commodities that it needs to meet its organizational goals. Additionally,
proper supply management ensures that stocks are replenished before they are depleted thereby
bringing the company's production to a halt (Monczka et al., 2015). Therefore, this academic

procurement and supply management is an added advantage. Those who have Masters degrees in

Professional experience
Davey is a professional purchasing and sales associate who has been numerously exposed
to various professional experiences that have further sharpened his skills. In this regard, Davey
has four years of experience as a sales assistant, and a further two-year experience in a similar
position as the one he currently holds in one of the major supermarket chains in the United States
of America.
Operational and Strategic Objectives of the Supply and Purchasing Department
An effective supply and purchasing department is crucial to a successful chain management
process (Christopher, 2016). At Vane Supermarket, the Supply and Purchasing department has
various operational and strategic objectives to guide the department in meeting its goals. These
objectives are:
(a) To get the best possible prices and terms for various commodities in the supermarket
thereby lowering the cost of purchases. In so doing, the department should not
compromise on quality as the store prides itself on offering the highest quality products at
reasonable prices.
(b) To effectively share and manage risks with various suppliers thereby not exposing the
supermarket to unnecessary business risks. In this regard, the department must ensure the
security of supply by diversifying its suppliers thereby not over-relying on a specific
supplier.
INTERVIEWING
6
(c) To foster a good working relationship between the supermarket and its suppliers. The
department should strive to maintain relevant business contacts and convince suppliers to
work with the organization for the long term. This ensures predictability and certainty
which are important in a volatile market, such as the supermarket industry.
(d) Pursuing innovation by encouraging the sourcing of innovative goods and services to
give the supermarket a competitive edge in the industry. In this regard, the supermarket
should strive to stock newly innovated products to ensure that their customers have a
wide range of variety when shopping. Innovative goods and services give the
organization a competitive edge in terms of price, quality, and convenience.
(e) To leverage technology thereby improving the customer experience at the store. The
department should use technology to solve the various sales and purchases problems the
organization faces. In the 21st century, businesses must be abreast of the technological
advancements in their industry since these innovations increase the productivity and
efficiency of the company.
Alignment of the Objectives of Supply align with the Goals and Objectives of the
Organization
The above-mentioned objectives of supply are intricately intertwined with the goals and
mission organization. The supply objectives are specifically designed to ensure that Vane
Supermarket achieves its ambitious organizational goals. Firstly, by successfully sourcing for
high-quality commodities at reasonable prices the supermarket can effectively meet its mission
and goal of providing quality products at low prices (Monczka et al., 2015). Also, this ensures
that the supermarket is the grocery of choice in its locality as envisaged by its mission. Secondly,
INTERVIEWING
if the supply department sources for a wide variety of products and integrate technology in their
operations, the supermarket will be able to offer its client a huge range of choice which is
essential in bolstering customer experience. Also, the supply department ensures that the stocks
are up-to-date and the supermarket does not run out of commodities. Therefore, the purchasing
and supply department plays major role in achieving the company’s organizational goals.
