Steps to Take
In the United States, needle stick injuries are around 385,000 annually, and in effect,
nurses are exposed to over 20 bloodborne pathogens (Katz, 2013). At some point, nurses are
made to understand that needlestick injuries are bound to occur during the patients care.
However, most injuries are as a result of not following standard procedures like not wearing
personal protection equipment (PPE). The nurse should first clean the injured part immediately
with soap and water, then notify the supervisor and lastly seek evaluation from the hospital’s
laboratory.
