Introduction

The United States got its independence on July 4th, 1776 after engaging in a long revolution
battle with Britain. Since independence, a total of 45 presidents have ruled the United States.
Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States who ruled from 27th April 1822 to 23rd
July 1885. He became the president of the U.S. after defeating his competitor Horatio Seymour
who was running in a Democrat ticket in the presidential election of 1868. President Grant was

Greeley was nominated to oppose President Grant.

A brief history of Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was born on 27th April 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. His father was Jesse
Root Grant who was a tanner, farmer and prosperous leather merchant who had leather goods
shops & tanneries and in several States. His mother was Hannah Grant who was a homemaker.
Ulysses S. Grant grew up in Georgetown, Ohio, where his family settled after his birth. He joined
the United States Military Academy at West Point at the age of 17 years (Allen, 2011). Grant was
a standout student at West Point. He performed averagely and at some point, he was reprimanded
for lateness and dressing badly. However, Grant performed well in math and horsemanship. He
graduated from West Point in 1843.
