Persuasive Request to Pursue Research

Typically, before a writer would expend energy on a researched proposal, he or she would ask for permission from a decision-maker to start their project. You practiced writing a short persuasive memo in the Discussion. Now use what you learned in terms of persuasive writing in this Assignment.

You will write a memo as if writing to your decision-maker requesting permission to move forward with your topic (Retraining for Safety) for the researched business problem proposal, and provide evidence to support the viability of your topic. (PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACTHED PROPOSAL AND BUILD FROM IT)

Checklist:

  • Contains no fewer than 500 and no more than 700 words.
  • Follows correct memo format, including headings.
  • Describes the problem or project you want to work on and explains its significance.

For my research project I will propose the need for retraining for safety. I am currently employed at Diebold Nixdorf, where we manufacture Automatic Teller Machines(ATM) to ship around the world. In our receiving department there is a constant traffic flow of large trucks and forklifts. This has created and dangerous environment for employees to operate in. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2013a) data has identified approximately 6,820 occupational injuries involving forklifts that resulted in days away from work. Of these injuries, 4,320 occurred in the manufacturing industry. The same year, 4,585 total deaths occurred, of which 70 were due to forklifts (BLS, 2013b). As a result, millions of dollars are spent on medical bills, lost wages, rehabilitation costs and attorney fees. This amount does not include the cost of suffering experienced by injured employees and their families. At Diebold Nixdorf, we currently have twenty-two consecutive days without any safety issues. This along with the amount of lost days caused from a work related injury are recorded. All of this correlates to the overall production of Diebold Nixdorf. To correct this issue, I purpose retraining for safety. My research supports the importance of retraining employees for safety. In both case studies found in, “Regulating Forklift Safety: Strategies to Prevent Injury & Improve Compliance”, by Tracey L. Cekada and Christopher A Janica, the operator of the forklift became deceased following the injuries suffered from the crash. These fatalities at work can be devastating to coworkers causing them to miss additional days. Both of these fatal injuries could have been avoided with the implementation of retraining programs. In most warehouse environment forklifts use the horn to inform everyone it is in motion. Back up sensors can also be found on certain forklift models. This practice is taught in the initial training of the employee receives. In this article, the author elaborates on the need to have forklift operators retrained at a minimum of every three years. The time the retraining will occur can vary for each employee. Training guidelines and expectations are outlined by, “DirectiveNo. CPL 0201028, Compliance Assistance for the Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Standards, outlines the inspection guidelines, enforcement guidance, and questions and answers pertaining to different aspects of the forklift standard.” The list of requirements that should be taught in training are provided by the, ANSI (2016). By using the guidelines and practices outlined in article by Tracey L. Cekada and Christopher A Janica, to help implement the retraining for safety we will effectively increase the numbers or days without a work related injury. Overall increasing the bottom line for Diebold Nixdorf. Reference: Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). (2013a). Occupational injuries/illnesses and fatal profiles.
