Discuss three points in this week’s reading on Evaluation Evaluation is a secondary step to discovering the meaning of the passage that is studied. Evaluation encompasses “assessing the worth of something, to praise its excellence, relevance, and usefulness” (Traina, p. 203). Firstly, there is a certain pattern which must be followed in using evaluation, as it must be done after interpretation is completed and it is necessary for it to be done before any part of the application process (p. 204). The certain criteria surrounding the use of evaluation enable it to be used successfully. With a methodical Bible study, there are specific procedures laid out to ensure that the most is received out of it. Traina states, “if proper appraisal occurs, the valid application is well on its way” (p. 204). If the steps and process of evaluation is used improperly the foundation of the study is faulty and leads to an inadequate interpretation. The other two points are that there are two types of evaluation that Traina states in the book, first is general evaluation, second is specific evaluation. General evaluation is concerned with the Scriptures as a whole and its general soundness and importance. This puts into perspective the question of if the Bible is of any significance for the persons in modern society. Seeing if the Bible carries any significance or if it is unacceptable and impractical is a serious question. This is the focus of what is being answered through the evaluation and application stages of the methodical study. Though thorough investigation with using tests of truth and value the authenticity of application in a modern society is verifiable. This takes detailed examination and time to verify the authenticity through steps of testing congruency, genuineness, reliability of witnesses, and the psychological soundness of Scripture (p. 205). The first type of evaluation is broad and examines the passages with generalities. The second type of evaluation is specific in nature. This type looks at the particular statements within passages to examine who they are applicable towards, whether it be the society of the time within the passage or also today’s society. Traina writes that the focus of this phase is to evaluate “statements of a passage in order to determine which of its truths are timeless and therefore of contemporary worth” (p. 206). Overall, with observing the phase of evaluation through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, one will ascertain the truths revealed correctly and be able to live out the revelation that was received and implement it into their understanding.
