A bipolar disorder which is also referred to as manic depression is a mental illness which
brings out a severe high and low moods as well as changes in sleep, thinking, energy and also
behavior. For the people who have this kind of disorder they can have times they feel extra
happy and energized, and during some other times, they feel very sad, desperate, and inactive.
Just between those kinds of periods, they ordinarily feel normal. The highs and lows can be taken
into consideration as two poles of mood which is the reason as to why it is known as bipolar
disorder (Vancampfort, Stubbs, Mitchell, Hert, Wampers, Ward, & Correll, 2015).

During the times when one with the bipolar disorder feels so excited and overconfident,
the situation can be referred to as manic. The feelings can also include bad temper and an
impulsive or careless making of decisions. During mania, almost half of the people suffering
might also have delusions in that they believe in things which are not true. They can as well have
hallucinations in which they hear or see things which are not there (Grunze, 2015).

When people who have the bipolar disorder feel so sad and depressed, it is referred to as
depressive. The persons at this time usually have very little energy, and they also have a problem
sleeping in that they came to sleep too much or too little. They mostly feel worried and empty,
and they also cannot enjoy anything. Depressive symptoms are primarily found in the people
with bipolar disorder for a long time compared to the manic symptoms (Holländare, Eriksson,
Lövgren, Humble, & Boersma, 2015).

The dramatic episodes of high and low moods in bipolar disorder do not follow a specific
pattern. Someone with the problem can be in the same state of mood, either manic or depressed,
several times before they could switch to the opposite mood. The episodes can happen for over a

Bipolar disorder can be developed in someone starting when they are in the late
adolescence or young adulthood. It can rarely be generated during the early childhood. The
disorder can even run in families, and it is equal for both men and women to get it. Never the
less, women are somehow more likely to have rapid cycling than men, in that they can have four
or more different mood episodes in a year. The women also take more time depressed than the
men with bipolar disorder do.
